Quotes by Mattie Stepanek, One of the World's Greatest Peacemakers:

Mattie Stepanek (July 17, 1990 – June 22, 2004) - Poet & Peacemaker...angel on earth:

At the age of three, Mattie started to write poetry.  His 7 books regarding what he calls "Heartsongs", were all New York Times best sellers. Jeni Stepanek, Mattie's mother & "Mama Peace", also authored a best sellers since Mattie lost his fight for life to disease.

Mattie suffered from a rare form of muscular dystrophy, that resulted in his death just prior to his 14th birthday. His sister and two brothers also died from the disease during early childhood, and his mother has the adult form, diagnosed only after all four of her children were born.

"We have known kings and queens, and we've known presidents and prime ministers, but the most extraordinary person whom I have ever known in my life is Mattie Stepanek. His life philosophy was 'Remember to play after every storm!' and his motto was: 'Think Gently, Speak Gently, Live Gently'. He wanted to be remembered as "a poet, a peacemaker, and a philosopher who played"  -  Jimmy Carter, Eulogy to Mattie

“Mattie was an incarnated, in the flesh, human being angel…Mattie the peacemaker is finally at peace.  There was no braver soul, nor bigger spirit, in so small and frail a body.”

“Our Heartsong is our reason for being.  If you want to understand what a Heartsong is, think about what matters most to you.  What do you want?  What do you need?  Not a toy, not a thing, but what do you, as a human being need?  You understand why that matters?  That’s what you are called to offer other people.  That is your Heartsong.  You should share that through something you enjoy, something that you are good at.”

When Mattie was 7 and read about how Jimmy Carter helped negotiate peace with two countries at war, he said to his mom, “Wow mommy, this man Jimmy Carter said ‘Look what theses people have chosen for their country’ ”  His mother Jeni Stepanek responded, “Yes Mattie, Jimmy Carter was a president & a peacemaker”  Mattie said  “No Mommy, listen.  He didn’t go over there & say, ‘I brought peace’.  He said, ‘Look what these people have done for their country’.  He made them own it, so that when they start arguing again, it’s not because he is not there.  It’s because they stopped choosing it.”
